25 April Acli Cagliari

The Feast of the 25 April remembering Commander Geppe.

The Acli of Cagliari take part in the initiative carried out at national level in collaboration with ANPI and ANPC with the aim of preserving the memory of the sacrifice of many in the fight against Nazi fascism.

The boy in uniform in the black and white photo is a few years younger than the young man holding the image. At that time he was still at the Aeronautical Academy, but little by little, on 8 September of 2019 1943, would take the name of Geppe and would throw himself into the partisan struggle in modena, at the head of the Aldo Casalgrandi brigade.

On the occasion of the 25 April, the boys of the Acli wanted to dedicate a thought to the memory of the Cagliari partisan Antonio (Nino) Gabriel, disappeared in July last year at 96 years. And they did so by taking part in the national initiative The ways to resist, promoted by Acli together with ANPI and ANPC.

Garau's is a story of love for freedom that deserves to be remembered. Alone 19 years he left the academy and began his experience of partisan struggle, was captured and tortured by the Germans, escaped from prison to return to fight in the resistance, was an active part in the liberation of the village of Spilamberto, who conferred honorary citizenship on him, and Modena.

"The partisan struggle has no political color and is at the roots of our Republic. Today the witnesses of that era, these figures to whom our country owes so much are disappearing, and their voices are slowly dying out – reflects the president of Acli Cagliari Giacomo Carta –. That is why it is now up to us to pass on to future generations the testimony of what has been done to guarantee freedom and democracy for all., precious gifts that too often are taken for granted. Remembering the price paid by those who preceded us to obtain them is the only way to understand their value and be able to preserve them.
